While everyone agrees that a hybrid cars’ fuel economy is one of its major strengths, many have argued that the extra costs of repair and maintenance makes it less desirable. Critics of hybrids have claimed that the high costs of replacing battery packs offsets the higher price usually paid for them.  We do not agree.

Our experience in our Oakland Repair Shop corroborates the study findings.  In reality repair and maintenance cost of hybrids is practically the same as that of conventional gasoline cars. There are several reasons for this:

• Long term guarantees from manufacturers  --  All the hybrid-specific components are covered under warranty for eight years/100,000 miles or 10 years/150,000 miles. 
• Battery packs have been tested to last well beyond the warranty period – The life span of batteries because of their cost is a key element in the success of hybrid vehicles.  Car makers are well aware of this and they simply make components that will last longer.
• The cost of the hybrid specific components keeps coming down – As more cars are sold economies of scale cost reductions and improved technologies  are making the components cheaper.
• Similar repair and maintenance costs for non-hybrid parts – For the non-hybrid components of the vehicle there is virtually no repair and maintenance cost difference between hybrids and conventional cars.

So, it appears those batteries will last the life of the car and have the potential to save hundreds of gallons of gasoline and with the next generation of lithium ion batteries it may be one of the keys to help reduce our dependency on oil.

Used transmissions and engines often come from Japan and other countries where by law cars must be replaced when they reach a certain mileage level or years in operation.  For example, standards in Japan are much higher than in the US and result in cars being taken out of the market in under four years.  This Japanese government mandated program helps stimulate the local economy by generating demand for new cars.  This results in large quantities of low mileage car engines and transmissions of great value.  Many of these low mileage engines and transmissions are then exported and distributed by companies here in the US market. 

We are often asked about the reliability of used Japanese engines and transmissions and if it makes sense to invest in them to prolong the life of an aging car.  Clearly, the cost of replacing an engine or transmission is much less than the cost of buying a new car or even having an existing component rebuilt.  That alone is a major benefit to many car owners who just want to get more miles out of their vehicles.  Aside from the economic factors, if you are considering an engine or transmission replacement you must take into account two very important factors—the mechanical quality of the used component and the necessity to have it properly installed.  Undoubtedly, a low mileage used engine that has been thoroughly tested can extend the life of your car considerably.  No less important is the fact that all remanufactured engines be properly installed.
